What 210 JHigh Means to Volunteer Gayle Halvorsen

I look at my life just a year ago and I can’t believe what changes and answers to prayer God has faithfully brought about just for me— let alone 210 Student Ministry!

I had reached a point of professional burnout in my life, and my struggle with infertility had taken its toll as well. I was dealing with so much stress-induced physical pain, fear, and anxiety that I decided to quit my job altogether not knowing what I would do next. Fortunately I am blessed to have a supportive husband who was there by my side to make that possible. I can remember driving home from work on the Katy Freeway crying, pleading with God to let me use my talents for him. While I love the work that I do as a television writer/producer, the stress wasn’t worth it anymore. I needed more and I needed a major dose of serving God again.

The first thing I did was immediately reach out to the Youth Ministry at Second. I have a passion for teenagers, especially J-Highers, and have worked with them many times in the past but not for several years. The timing was perfect as only God can make it. Brian Mills had just begun with his vision for the ministry, and Jeremiah and Michael were coming on board. I can remember my first meeting (AKA Kelsey BBQ) as a volunteer and being truly inspired by what Brian said God was going to do with this 210 Student Ministry. It was absolute confirmation for me that God was leading me to be a part of this ministry. My plan was just to be a volunteer leader for the kids, but apparently God had a bigger plan that included answering my “Katy Freeway” pleadings. He even delivered all the video equipment to the 210 Student Ministry staff just in time for me to get started. (Did you know that 210 Student Ministry is currently the only department in the church besides the media department itself that has its own professional video editing equipment.) I can honestly say I have never worked harder or longer at making videos than now, but also never felt more rewarded than now. Let me quickly add-- it’s not all me though, it takes a lot to keep relevant with the kids—Brett Davis, Michael Head, and others bring a lot of media talent to the team as well.

I almost thought Second was going to become my new profession because frankly I can’t imagine doing anything other than the video volunteer work I’m doing now, but once again I must have been limiting God’s plan with my own. Instead the training, new skills, and contacts made from all my volunteer media work with 210 over the past 8 months has led me to launch my own media business—something I would never have dreamed just a year ago that I would be doing—and it’s even included my husband becoming a big part.

The 210 Student Ministry Team has been incredibly instrumental in rebuilding my professional confidence and in strengthening my relationship with Christ. I love them all and thank them for the opportunity to serve. The ministry is growing and kids are coming to church and coming to Christ. It is ‘utterly amazing’—and the wall came down! Wow! I love the verse Matthew 6:33 “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” It’s like Christianity 101, but for me, I still really have to focus on it to stay on track. So if you’re reading this and can relate, maybe you just need to come to a complete stop in order to get going in the right direction again.

What does 210 Student Ministry mean to me? Everything. As a student in one my videos once said “I can’t imagine my life without it.”

More Deep End Testimonies...

This is from Morgan Patteson, another JHIGH student who finished up deep end..

The following is my Deep End testimonial. I hope it helps in some way.

The Deep End bible study has helped me in many ways. This bible study has helped my relationship with God to grow. I can honestly say that my relationship with God is different now than it was before the Deep End bible study. I must also add, so as not to confuse you, that my rlationship has changed for the better. Also, I have been able to, with the help of Deep End, evaluate my walk with God. Now, I know my weaknesses and areas I need to work on in my relationship with God. Knowing what I need to do to become a better servant and child of God will most definately help me to continue to grow in my faith. Finally, I have established a great routine of having an in depth Quiet Time by using this bible study's daily work every morning. For a time the Deep End bible study will be over for me, but I will be able to continue my Quiet Times as usual with a new found thought process. I now can analyze myself and decide what it is I need to modify or stop doing to bring me closer to what God wants for my life. Deep End has been an awesome way for me to come closer to God. I have loved every minute of it!

Deep End...

I am so excited to announce that we now have 7 JHIGH Students that have completed the 6 week Discipleship Material that the Second Baptist Student Ministry has written called Deep End. This is so important for these students as they start out there walks with Christ and now they have the basic foundation to the Christian walk.
Here is an email I just received from Adrian, who accepted Christ at Beach Retreat 08. This is an 8th Grade student I am not going to edit it at all and here it is....

Heyy this is adrian.. from deep end.....

I
thought Deep End was amazing. It really helped me get closer to god as a person
myself and realized that everything on earth.....doesn't matter. When we
die all our earthly possessions and objects won't matter. All that matters is
god...and your walk on Earth with him.
I learned what things can bring you
down in life. Hanging out with the wrong friends and staying too
late with a girlfriend is a trap that Satin lays out for us to
step in. It can ultimately lead to a major sin that you would regret. The devil
puts us in all these temptations to lead us away from god. But when you're
strong with god and you have god on your side...the devil cannot win. You have
already won the fight.
Ever since Deep End...I've been feeling a lot more on
fire for god and I just keep wanting more. I can't stop wanting more. I need
more. Through this bible study...more of my friends have been able to see god's
glory and some have gotten closer to god...it's amazing. Deep End has also
given me better Leadership...and through that I influence my friends to see god
and how amazing he is. I have helped several friends out now with their problems
that they are struggling with and eventually help bring them to plugged-in and
closer to god overall.
A lot of my friendships have gotten stronger since
Deep End. I can talk more openly about god and it's great. I've also met a lot
of new friends and help them know god better.
Well since I learned
these 6 different lessons....I have changed a lot. Things I cared
a lot about before, weren't as important to me
anymore. It's such an amazing feeling. I've been praying a lot more and
reading the bible and I've been able to understand god's word a lot better.
I've been able to bring others closer to Christ through what I've learned at
Deep End. To me....it just can't get any more amazing
than that. I have learned to live my life to serve god. What else can
I say? Deep End was simply amazing...

What 210 JHigh Means to Volunteer Lynette Campbell

About three years ago, I attended my first JH Beach Retreat. I primarily did this to find out why did my kids want to go every summer. I would have thought they would be bored of it. I was so impressed and in awe of what God was doing in these kids lives. I could not believe the fun, music, games, and evening worships. Being a mother of three boys; it was so much fun to be in a condo with girls. I still remember the first girls from Beckendorf JH and then the last two years with MCJH girls. These girls have made such a lasting impression on me.

After this experience, I wanted to do more. At that time, my middle son was entering 9th grade. He was a little leery about his mom being at the JH functions; but he saw how much I enjoyed it and what was happening in the kids lives. I am proud to say that over the past few years, I have been involved with JH Ministry on Sunday mornings and when I can on Wednesday's at Plugged In. This is so inspirational to watch these kids grow in God's word. You really get to see their hearts. Alot of these young students just need someone to listen to them. They want to belong to a group who makes them feel good about themselves. You don't have to be know the Bible backwards and forwards nor do you have to be an expert on teenagers. You will grow with these incredible kids. My youngest son will be in eighth grade and he has never regretted his mom being at his activities. In some ways, we have grown together in our walk with the Lord. I would encourage everyone to take that step and join JH Ministry. You will never regret it; it will change your life forever

What does 210 JHIGH Volunteer Mike Winkelmann say about our ministry?

Have you ever looked at an old picture of a child and thought man, they have really grown? I was reading Habakkuk this morning and thinking about what Brian said when you guys started last year. When you think back on the old picture of where we were a year ago, it is "utterly amazing" what God has done since that time. Has our ministry doubled? tripled? The wall really came down!! We are ministering to kids (and adults) from China!!! I have a lump in my throat thinking about that old picture. I can't wait to se what He has in store for us next.

You guys are doing an amazing job!

JHIGH

This week in JHIGH on Wednesday we will be having ............

Then on Thursday we will be going to have our Bible Study on Cults and Religions... Then going to paint houses after.

Camp Eagle

This past week we took 18 students of our Dedicated leadership team to camp eagle. This camp was amazing, it is not your typical camp with a worship service and free time and A/C. We had no worship service, no free time and no A/C. Instead we had Rappelling 85 feet, Cliff traversing, river Traversing, Mountain Climbing, Night rappelling, Long Hikes, 2 hour Quiet times, for one dinner we all ate out of the same metal container with limited forks, we built our own shelter at the camp dump, hiked some more, blobbed, zip lined into the river, played in a mud pit, Hiked allot more, had deep discussions around camp fires, packed our lunch every day and ate it on a trail. And so much more. .... It was a great week for us and I can not begin to tell you the amazing things God did through the students and what He is doing in me after this week.
On top of a huge Hill this is an alter with exact specifications to a Biblical alter
